(At least, you shouldn’t be able to.)
I was talking to my sister earlier, (I am at home this weekend), and she was explaining that she has to write an essay about when she was discriminated against. I told her that under the concept of Freedom of Association most cases of “discrimination” are, while stupid and mean, not a problem that should be solved through government intervention. (Which is true for most situations. Were we not raised to believe that “violence is not the answer”? Hmm.) Anyway, she asked about voting and voting discrimination, and I made the above statement.
“You Can’t Vote On My Freedom”
April 27, 2008On the economic highway, there is no middle way.
April 18, 2008“Middle-of-the-Road Policy Leads to Socialism”
This is a writing by Ludwig von Mises that explains the problem with the thinking that has made the US government so huge, and so controlling. Essentially, it proves that the theoretical “middle of the road” between free-market (true) capitalism, and socialism is: 1) unstable and 2) really a entirely separate system. It really lines up with what I see going on in politics today
Taxes, “Pacifists”, Hypocrisy
April 10, 2008So, most of the self-proclaimed pacifists I know are in favor taxes on people for the purpose of “sharing the wealth”. For them, I have this:
Since taxes are obviously not a matter of choice, they need to be enforced through violence. Since you are voting for those who would impose taxes, are you not essentially endorsing violence? How does that square with your “pacifism”? Our government is only a construct to represent the will of the people, and your vote expresses a violent will!
Now, I know that they will seek to skirt the issue.
“pacifist”: Well… the rich STEAL! Something must be done to punish them!.
me: I doubt that. Most of them got there doing business, which requires them to be fairly trustworthy.
“pacifist”: What about that Enron dude? Hah! Gotcha!
me: …What?… Saying that taxation is good because it punishes a handful of cheaters is like saying that detonating a tactical nuke in New York City is good because it kills a pickpocket.
If I am lucky, this will cause some real thinking to start occurring. I do not expect to have any luck.
